Jaguar Swiss Quartz

This beauty piece belongs to a friend of mine. He finally stops getting cheap watches and got this Jaguar some months back. Quite a high end watch... And by high end I mean its definitely a step above what I regularly get, fitting (finally) his financial status.



The only "problem" here is that it is Quartz. Well, it's not as charming as a mechanical.



The Jaguar has a Swiss Quartz movement, sapphire crystal and PVD coating. The nice perforated leather strap curves nicely by default, and the crown has some sort of a protected layer on top.



At the end of the day, I totally forgotten to take note of the particular model other than "Jaguar". Initially I had thought it may have something to do with Jaguar, the car company, but the two are apparently unrelated.

Eine der Tendenzen, die ich in diesem Jahr bemerkte, war eine deutliche Bewegung von einigen Firmen, um in den "tragbaren" Technologiebereich zu kommen. Throwback Thursday: Ke$ha x Baby-G BGA-160KS-7B supports Street Dog Welfare Program

Flashback Friday: The First Digital Compass G-Shock - the DW-9800 WADEMAN



Once part of the Master of G Line of G-Shocks, the now discontinued DW-8900 WADEMAN was launched in April 1999. It was the first G-Shock equipped with a magnetic direction sensor (digital compass), and has a temperature sensor as well that measures a range of -10 ~ 60 ℃.
The Wademan is a chunky watch, and is popular among collectors due to its scarcity. Costing JPY24,000 (USD235) when launched, asking price for mint specimens go as high as USD400+.

Throwback Thursday: Yokahama F.Marinos x G-Shock DW-5600

To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, Japanese football club Yokahama F.Marinos looked to G-Shock to produce the F.Marinos x G-Shock DW-5600. The F.Marinos are one of the most successful teams in Japanese professional football having won the J-League three times and with notable players including Shunsuke Nakamura and Julio Salinas.

The F.Marinos x G-Shock DW-5600 features the club's tricolour motif to the dial, gold F.Marinos text to the dial, a YFM EL, white band and bezel, custom caseback and packaging. This collaboration went on sale last week and is limited to 1000 pieces.

The F.Marinos x G-Shock DW-5600 was released in May 2012 to the tune of JPY15,750 (USD 154).

Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600 Watch

The Swiss Vacheron Constantin Celestia is a watch we covered when it was announced by Vacheron at the 2017 SIHH, but it is, to put it mildly, a watch that rewards repeated exposure, which is what I got a couple of weeks ago when I had an opportunity to photograph it at Vacheron’s headquarters in Switzerland. The Celestia is an extremely complex watch, but it’s also somewhat unique amongst highly complicated watches – it’s the most complicated wristwatch Vacheron Constantin has ever made. The basic idea behind the Celestia was to create a watch that would be a kind of horological exploration of astronomical complications – and which would also embody not just complications as such, but also express the deeper connection between the astronomical cycles that are behind what we see in the sky, and experience on Earth.

Prior to the Celestia, Vacheron’s most complex wristwatch was the Tour de L’Ile, which was made to celebrate Vacheron’s 250th anniversary. The Tour de L’Ile had a number of astronomical complications, as well as a tourbillon, perpetual calendar, and a minute repeater. At the time it was created, in 2005, it was the most complex wristwatch in the world and even today, 12 years later, it hasn’t lost the power to impress.


It was also a very large Vacheron Constantin Men’s Watch, which given the number of complications (16, by Vacheron’s count) is not surprising: 47mm in diameter and 17.8mm thick. There were a total of seven made, and for Vacheron’s 250th anniversary, the first was auctioned by Antiquorum and sold for CHF 1,876,250, which at the time was a record for any modern wristwatch. (At the same sale, the King Fouad I pocket watch, completed in 1929, sold for 3,306,250 Swiss francs, or about $2.7 million.)
The Celestia is unlike the Tour de L’Ile in having only astronomical indications, but it’s also unlike its predecessor in the comprehensiveness of the astronomical complications that it includes. Unlike many, maybe most, Grand Complication watches, because of its focus it achieves a kind of harmonious aesthetic effect you don’t often see in highly complicated watches. Wrist and pocket watches with a number of complications can sometimes seem, for all their complexity, a bit unfocused as well – as if in striving for complexity they sacrifice unity of conception. The Celestia, on the other hand, is for all its complexity, much more selective and in choosing to focus on a specific vision of time and how it’s modeled mechanically, it becomes in the end as much a philosophical statement as a watch.

Despite its complexity, the Celestia is very legible and the dial doesn’t feel crowded.
The Celestia is almost totally devoid of the ornate and even slightly archaic design cues of earlier complicated Vacheron wristwatches. The dial treatment, organization of the indications, and overall general feel are, contrary to usual Swiss practice when making a complicated watch, almost modernist in feel, at least in some respects – although the displays for the complications, other than the three dimensionality of the tide display, are basically traditional in structure and presentation of information. This means better legibility, but it also means a better sense of how each of the complications relates to the others both in terms of information, and on a more abstract level, as representations of different aspects of astronomical cycles.

Initially, when opening the box for the Omega X-33 Skywalker Solar Impulse [318.92.45.79.03.001]. I was a little apprehensive: this, is a quartz movement watch, from a company that increasingly wants to be seen as a truly luxury brand, by making more mechanical watches. The bright green and blue colours are strong and catch the eye, but lacks a little sophistication in my option. But over time it’s a design that has really grown on me.

Dial Closeup of Speedmaster X-33 Skywalker Solar ImpulseThe casing is built from dark looking grade 2 titanium with an excellent matte brush finish, which maintains its crispness around stylistic detailing, and reminds the wearer of its status as a tool watch. It is a comfortable 45mmwide with two buttons on either side of the face keeping multiple lines of strong symmetry.

Where’s the Moonwatch contains relics of the 60’s with a manually wound movement, constructed of stainless steel and a hesalite crystal face. The contemporary X-33 Skywalker uses the vastly more accurate ‘Omega calibre 5619’, a quartz TCXO (temperature compensated quartz oscillator) movement. And modern updated materials, currently better suited to the job. It is built from a light and strong titanium variety, a sapphire crystal protects the dial of the ana-digi face, and has a scratch resistant brushed blue ceramic bezel. The watch has also had significant input from real astronauts like Jean-François Clervoy to give it the functions that astronauts require on a mission in space. And as such has enjoyed adoption by genuine aviators and astronauts alike.

Some of the functions that it has are a ‘Mission Elapse Time Function’ (MET) which can tell astronauts how much time has passed or time remaining on their mission. Three time zones are set by calibrating the primary time at GMT + 0, and adding or subtracting time from this for the two secondary time zones. It also features:

The X-33 Skywalker Solar Impulse watch comes in a large matte black presentation box, with green accents, and a Solar Impulse badge emblazoned on the insert opposite the watch. The lightweight NATO strap follows this further, by taking its two shades of green and blue directly from the badge, to live on its wearer’s wrist.


The Build

The watch keeps focus on its goal and is rated as 30m water-resistant. This is not a diving watch and was not designed to come anywhere near water, but instead to endure the vacuum of space. The ESA have measured the watch’s performance in a laboratory vacuum chamber, in temperatures ranging from -45°C to 75°C (228°K to 348°K). An environment that would be unlikely for any astronaut to ever endure. And a centrifuge to subject it to the high levels of g-force that astronauts will need to endure during take-off.

The solid case back protrudes out of the base of the watch more than you would initially expect. This is due to the location of the alarms vents being on the back of the watch as to keep it concealed from view, and to not impede the projection of its audible alarm.

On the first ledge under the sapphire crystal dial are sub-second markers in white, contrasting with its green background. On the next rim are running second markers being broken up by subtracted hour indicators. Again all printed in white but on a matte blue background.

With the Omega Speedster Professional’s signature between the centre and three o’clock hour indicator.
Verdict

Ultimately the Speedmaster X-33 Skywalker (Solar Impulse) is a success in that it’s created for real astronauts and pilots as a useful tool that they will want to use without compromisations, other than as an expensive gimmick. It was created for a very specialised environment that few people will venture into. The watch is a rare glimpse of the future of watches, and their part in the exotic affair of space exploration.
